Dandy-Walker syndrome is a congenital disease that affects children's brain development. Children with this condition are born with brain malformations including enlarged parts of the brain (such as the fourth ventricle and fluid spaces surrounding the brain), some underdeveloped or missing parts of the brain (cerebellar vermis), and a cyst formed near the bottom of the skull. However, despite the malformations, some children may grow up with the syndrome completely unnoticed. Whereas, on the other hand, some children may present with Dandy-Walker syndrome that appears drastically.
Symptoms usually appear during infant years and may include an enlarging skull and slow muscle and bone growth. Symptoms in older children may show as a bulge in the back of the skull, nerve problems controlling the face, neck and breathing, jerky eye movements, no muscle coordination, seizures, vomiting and irritability. Because Dandy-Walker syndrome affects the brain, other parts of the central nervous system may also be affected like malformations of the heart, face, fingers and toes.
Unlike other childhood conditions, there is not much research or education on Dandy-Walker Syndrome. That is why we are striving to bring awareness and raise funds for more research and education on Dandy-Walker syndrome.
Fun fact: According to the Dandy-Walker Alliance, did you know that 1 in 2,500 babies are born with Dandy-Walker syndrome?
Event Hosted by the University of South Florida College of Pharmacy, Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group/National Community Pharmacists Associtation. All proceeds goes towards the Dandy-Walker Alliance. For more information visit dandy-walker.org
